CRISM View

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why do I need a supported version of Java™ installed?

A: CRISM View makes extensive use of Java™ for many tools and features. If you do not have the correct version of Java™ installed, CRISM View will not work properly. Visit the First Time Users section on the main CRISM View page for installation instruction.

Q: I have Java™ installed on my computer. Why am I being told to install an earlier version?

A: If you have Java™ version 1.5.0 or later installed on your computer, all features will work correctly in most cases. However, some users may experience problems. If you receive errors when trying to run the application, you may have an incorrect version of Java installed.

We strongly recommend that you install an earlier version of Java. Visit the First Time Users section on main CRISM View page for installation instruction.

Q: When I launch CRISM View the application seems to load but then gives me a "Unable to launch CRISM SciBox Orbit View error". How can I get the application to run?

A: Most likely you do not have Java3D™ installed - or may have the incorrect version of Java3D™. You need Java3D™ version 1.4. If you have Java3D™ version 1.5 or later installed on your computer, you may experience problems.

Visit the First Time Users section on main CRISM View page for installation instruction.

Q: How do I uninstall previous versions of Java and Java3D in order to install recommended versions? (PC Users Only)

A: Follow the steps below.

  1. Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs.
  2. Scroll down to programs beginning with "J2SE" or "Java™ 2 Runtime Environment" and click "Remove" to any of these installed programs.
  3. Scroll down to Java3D™ and click "Remove."

Q: I have Mac OS X 10.3.1 or later, but still cannot get CRISM View to run. Do I need to install something to make it work? (MAC Users Only)

A: You may need to manually install Java3D™ from the Apple web site.
